NetApp Introduces AltaVault for Cloud Backup

NetApp Inc. today introduced the AltaVault cloud-integrated storage solution, promising cheaper backup to the Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS) cloud.

Formerly called SteelStore, the AltaVault cloud-based appliances are available in the AWS Marketplace in several configurations.

The company also provides physical and virtual (for VMware ESX and Microsoft Hyper-V) appliances and a cloud-based appliance for the Microsoft Azure cloud.

The company said its solutions feature inline data deduplication and compression that can provide up to a 30:1 data deduction ratio, so users don't have to send as much data to the cloud and can send the needed data more quickly. AltaVault also works with the company's SnapProtect backup and recovery management software and can integrate with other third-party backup software.

"Our new AltaVault solutions will include an extended services offering and help optimize IT operations by providing performance support for the backup and archive environment throughout knowledge transfer, on-site and remote troubleshooting and customized proactive care," the company said. "In addition, NetApp experts will help customers build a roadmap for data protection that aligns to their business needs and requirements and identify and prioritize data that is suitable for the cloud. The outcome is a solution-based proposal with actionable recommendations tied to an overall cloud strategy."

The cloud-based appliances are available now, while several virtual appliances and a physical appliance are available from the company or its resellers, with the AVA800 physical appliance expected to be available in the third quarter of this year.
