AWS Adds EC2 Image Watermarks to Strengthen Trusted AMI Management

Amazon Web Services has introduced image watermark support for Amazon EC2 Allowed AMIs, adding a new mechanism to help organizations identify and enforce the use of approved virtual machine images. The feature enables customers to apply watermarks to authorized Amazon Machine Images (AMIs), making it easier to distinguish trusted images from unauthorized or unapproved versions. The capability is designed to support governance policies and improve consistency across cloud deployments.

Each watermark includes metadata such as the AMI ID, owner ID, region, and creation timestamps, providing reliable provenance that persists regardless of how many times an AMI is copied or new AMIs are created from it. AMI Watermarks improve AMI tracking by enabling you to filter and find related AMIs across your accounts.

AWS said the enhancement integrates with EC2 Allowed AMIs, allowing administrators to strengthen controls over which images can be launched in their environments. The update is intended to help organizations reduce configuration drift and improve compliance with internal security standards. AMI watermarks are available to all customers at no additional cost in all AWS regions including AWS China (Beijing) Region, operated by Sinnet, and AWS China (Ningxia) Region, operated by NWCD, and AWS GovCloud (US) Regions.
