AWS, AT&T Work on Joint IoT and Networking Solutions
Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS) has signed a deal with telecom giant AT&T to develop integrated Internet of Things (IoT) and networking solutions for businesses.
Announced Thursday, the partnership will see the two companies working together on mobility, cloud networking, IoT, analytics and security solutions that are aimed at their joint customers.
"We're helping businesses connect everything and anything to the cloud," said Mo Katibeh, senior vice president of Advanced Solutions at AT&T, in a prepared statement. "More importantly, we're doing this so it can be simple, scalable and highly secure."
At the outset, the partnership will revolve around three areas.
First, the two companies will develop IoT-enabled AT&T devices based on the AWS IoT platform. Launched in late 2015, the AWS IoT platform gives developers and device OEMs a framework for connecting devices to the cloud, and for building, deploying and managing IoT apps.
Under the terms of the partnership, customers will also have access to AT&T's IoT Starter Kit and to IoT-optimized data plans.
Second, the companies will work to improve the integration between the AWS cloud and the AT&T NetBond service, which enables organizations to securely access AWS -- or one of AT&T's other cloud partners -- without being exposed to the public Internet.
"Emphasis will be placed on enhancing end-to-end customer visibility across more highly secure and high-performing network connections, allowing for faster and more automated decision-making capabilities to the customer," AT&T said in its announcement.
Third, AT&T and AWS will pool their security resources to bolster AT&T's Threat Intellect, a security platform that uses machine learning and data analytics to anticipate, detect and protect against network security threats.
The two companies said that the partnership could expand into other areas in the future, but did not elaborate further.

"We are excited to expand our alliance with AT&T and deliver new solutions designed to enable customers to accelerate their journey to the AWS cloud."
