AWS Integrates AgentCore with Step Functions for AI Agent Orchestration

Amazon Web Services has introduced an integration between AWS Step Functions and AgentCore, expanding support for orchestrating AI agents within enterprise applications and automated workflows.

The integration allows developers to coordinate AI agents alongside traditional application processes using Step Functions’ workflow management capabilities. The goal is to simplify how organizations build, monitor and manage complex workflows that involve both AI-driven and conventional business operations. The integration allows automation of reasoning, allows multiple agents to run at once and allows agent context to be persisted across invocations using a session ID that works within or across workflow executions.

AWS said the combination of AgentCore and Step Functions provides a structured way to manage multi-step tasks, agent interactions and decision-making processes. The capability is designed to help organizations deploy AI-powered workflows while maintaining visibility, reliability and operational controls. The harness integration is available in the following AWS Regions where the AgentCore harness preview is available: US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), Europe (Frankfurt), and Asia Pacific (Sydney).
