AWS Expands AI Certification Portfolio as Demand for GenAI Skills Surges

Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced an expanded suite of AI certifications to help professionals validate their expertise and advance in high-demand technical roles. The new lineup includes four certifications that span from foundational knowledge for business professionals to advanced generative AI development for experienced engineers.

Key takeaways of this initiative as presented by AWS include:

  • AWS features four AI certifications that help professionals validate their skills and command up to 47% higher salaries in IT roles.
  • The certifications range from foundational knowledge for non-technical roles to professional expertise for experienced AI developers.
  • Free and low-cost training resources are available through AWS Skill Builder to help prepare for certification exams.

Following are more details about those takeaways:

The highlight is the new AWS Certified Generative AI Developer - Professional certification, which validates the ability to design, build, and deploy enterprise-grade generative AI applications on AWS. The credential covers advanced topics including foundation model selection, vector database integration, prompt engineering, and cost optimization for scalable AI deployments. Registration for the beta exam opens Nov. 18.

This new professional-level certification builds on three existing AI and machine learning credentials: AWS Certified AI Practitioner, AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer - Associate, and AWS Certified Data Engineer - Associate. Together, the four certifications form a comprehensive pathway for individuals at all stages of their AI career development--from non-technical business professionals to specialized engineers building production AI solutions.

According to a study commissioned by AWS, professionals with AI skills earn significantly more across industries, with IT roles commanding up to 47% higher salaries, sales and marketing 43%, and finance 42%. AWS said the certifications are designed to address the growing talent gap for roles focused on deploying, maintaining, and monitoring AI systems.

Each certification has a clear focus: AI Practitioner validates understanding of core AI concepts and responsible AI practices; Machine Learning Engineer covers scaling and maintaining real-time models; Data Engineer ensures proficiency in building data pipelines and quality management; and the new Generative AI Developer targets architects and developers implementing enterprise AI systems.

AWS also offers free and low-cost preparation resources through its AWS Skill Builder platform, including digital courses and practice exams, as well as structured career programs through the AWS Cloud Institute.
