Amazon Web Services Expands Customer Carbon Footprint Tool to Include Scope 3 Emissions

Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced an update to the Customer Carbon Footprint Tool (CCFT) that adds Scope 3 emissions data alongside updated Scope 1 and Scope 2 figures, giving customers a more complete view of the carbon impact of their cloud usage.

The expanded tool now includes emissions from fuel- and energy-related activities (FERA), information-technology hardware, data-center buildings and equipment, and transportation upstream of AWS operations. Scope 1 coverage also includes now refrigerants and natural gas in addition to backup diesel emissions. Historical emissions have been recalculated back to January 2022 using methodology version 3.0.0 so customers can analyse trends over time.

Customers can access the updated emissions breakdown via the AWS Billing and Cost Management console and the CCFT dashboard, export data as CSV or SQL, and filter by calculation method: location-based method (LBM) or market-based method (MBM). With all three scopes now covered, AWS says the CCFT enables organisations to monitor their emissions and track progress toward sustainability goals.
