Dell EMC Extends Backup, Storage Solutions to AWS

Dell EMC this week announced the addition of support for Amazon Web Services (AWS) in two of its data protection services.

The company's NetWorker and Data Domain products can now be purchased by organizations running AWS workloads.

The NetWorker software, which provides a unified platform for backup and recovery, now has a new version called "CloudBoost" designed for organizations that need to back up applications running on the AWS cloud.

"NetWorker with CloudBoost can run completely self-contained within an AWS environment and includes client-side optimized backups, inline de-duplication, encryption and compression with backup directly to Amazon S3," Dell EMC said in its announcement Monday.

Dell EMC has also enhanced its Data Domain line of storage appliances with the introduction of "Cloud Tier," a software add-on that lets users tier their data natively to Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3).

"With Data Domain Cloud Tier, customers can now natively tier data to Amazon S3 for long-term retention," Dell EMC said. "Only unique data is sent directly from Data Domain to the cloud and data lands on the cloud object storage already de-duplicated for a highly efficient and cost-effective solution."

Dell EMC is, of course, part of Dell Technologies, the newly formed tech megalith that emerged out of the $67 billion merger between Dell and EMC. That deal closed just two months ago.
