AWS Quietly Closes Door to Some Services, Including SimpleDB and CodeCommit

Amazon Web Services (AWS) will no longer accept new customers for seven of its services, it said recently.

The affected services are:

  • S3 Select: Used to filter data in an Amazon S3 object using SQL statements
  • CloudSearch: Used for building Web site and application search engines
  • Cloud9: A cloud-based IDE
  • SimpleDB: A NoSQL data store
  • Forecast: Used for machine learning-powered time-series forecasting
  • Data Pipeline: Used to automate data movements and transformations
  • CodeCommit: A source control service that hosts secure Git-based repositories

As of July 25, AWS stopped onboarding new customers for each of these services and shelved any plans for new features. Product pages for many (but not all) of the above products have been updated with links to a short boilerplate statement:

After careful consideration, we have made the decision to close new customer access to [product name], effective July 25, 2024. ... [E]xisting customers can continue to use the service as normal. AWS continues to invest in security, availability, and performance improvements for [product name], but we do not plan to introduce new features.

Otherwise, the move was announced with very little fanfare or explanation; AWS evangelist Jeff Barr noted it briefly on X this week, five days after the decision took effect. Judging by the replies, Barr's July 30 statement, below, appeared to be the first time that many AWS customers and partners were notified of the change.

After giving it a lot of thought, we made the decision to discontinue new access to a small number of services, including AWS CodeCommit.

While we are no longer onboarding new customers to these services, there are no plans to change the features or experience you get today, including keeping them secure and reliable.

We also support migrations to other AWS or third-party solutions better aligned with your evolving needs. Keep the feedback coming. We're always listening.

In response to a comment taking issue with the lack of notice from AWS, Barr said, "I hear you and we are making improvements so this is clearer for customers." He then provided the full list of affected products.
