AWS DevOps Advice Comprises Multiple 'Sagas'
For organizations looking for road-tested guidance on adopting DevOps, Amazon Web Services has published a series of "sagas" documenting best practices.
There are five DevOps Sagas in AWS' Well-Architected Framework DevOps Guidance, which it announced this week. According to a post on Tuesday by AWS DevOps lead Michael Rhyndress, the guidance collects advice and best practices gleaned by Amazon itself when it adopted DevOps internally over 20 years ago. It's designed to help organizations adopt DevOps or, if they're already an adopter, refine and update their approach to it.
"Taking the learnings from Amazon's own transformation journey and our experience managing global cloud services, the AWS DevOps Guidance was built to equip organizations of all sizes with best practice culture, processes, and technical capabilities that help to deliver business value and applications more securely and at a higher velocity," he wrote.
AWS divides its guidance into five separate modules, or "sagas," each of which focuses on a tenet of DevOps. They're called sagas because, according to AWS, "DevOps takes time and involves an ongoing, interconnected set of capabilities." Each saga provides guidance to organizations on patterns to implement (or not implement), key performance indicators, metrics and more.
The five sagas, as well as their descriptions, are as follows:
- Organizational adoption: Inspires the formation of a customer-centric, adaptive culture focused on optimizing people-driven processes, personal and professional development, and improving developer experience to set the foundation for successful DevOps adoption.
- Development lifecycle: Aims to enhance the organization's capacity to develop, review, and deploy workloads swiftly and securely. It uses feedback loops, consistent deployment methods, and the everything as code approach to attain efficiency in deployment.
- Quality assurance: Advocates for a proactive, test-first methodology integrated into the development process to help ensure that applications are well-architected by design, secure, cost-efficient, sustainable, and delivered with increased agility through automation.
- Automated governance: Facilitates directive, detective, preventive, and responsive measures at all stages of the development process. It emphasizes risk management, business process adherence, and application and infrastructure compliance at scale using automated processes, policies, and guardrails.
- Observability: Presents an approach to incorporating observability within environment and workloads, allowing teams to detect and address issues, improve performance, reduce costs, and help ensure alignment with business objectives and customer needs.
Organizations can tailor their approach to AWS' guidance as their particular business needs require, Rhyndress noted, though the company said it designed the sagas for a wide swath of organization types, from startups to enterprises, with varying degrees of cloud adoption.
