CenturyLink Unveils VMware Cloud on AWS Fully Managed Service
This week's VMworld conference may have just started, but CenturyLink issued some pre-emptive VMware news of its own last week with the announcement that it will offer a fully managed private cloud VMware service on the Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS) platform.
Officially called CenturyLink Private Cloud for VMware Cloud (VMC), the service will be available in multiple regions by winter 2019, said CenturyLink, a Monroe, La., VMware partner that specializes in networking, cloud, security and other technologies.
The upcoming integrated hybrid service -- developed in conjunction with VMware and AWS -- furthers the burgeoning software-defined networking (SDN) movement, which since its origins has expanded to include software-defined data centers (SDDC).
"The platform can extend on-premises vSphere environments to a VMware software-defined data center running on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) infrastructure," CenturyLink said in a news release. "The CenturyLink Private Cloud for VMC enables enterprises to run, manage, and secure their applications in a hybrid IT environment across a common management plane with their enterprise datacenter."
Benefits of the service include simplifying the way organizations build SDDCs, delivering accelerated time-to-value for IT workloads and a monthly payment scheme that avoids long-term commitments.
"As an innovator in the software-defined data center, this is another milestone on our journey to hybrid cloud solutions, enabling users to tap into private cloud resources anywhere our global network can reach," said CenturyLink exec David Shacochis. "These advances are fueled by CenturyLink's decades of expertise and mature relationships with both VMware and AWS."
