New Generation of I/O Optimized AWS EC2 Instances Unveiled
Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS) announced a new generation of storage-optimized computing instances designed for I/O intensive workloads.
They're called Amazon EC2 I3en instances, building upon the previous generation of I3 instances unveiled in February 2017.
The storage-optimized instances cater to cloud customers running high-transaction, low-latency workloads, for use cases like:
- NoSQL databases
- In-memory databases
- Data warehousing
- Elasticsearch
- Analytics workloads
AWS spokesperson Jeff Barr announced the next-gen instances last week, saying they were developed in response to feedback from customers who asked for:
- A lower price per TB of storage
- Increased storage density to allow consolidation of workloads and scale-up processing
- A higher ratio of network bandwidth and instance storage to vCPUs
In response, Barr said the I3en instances provide the following when compared to the I3 instances:
- A cost per GB of SSD instance storage that is up to 50 percent lower
- Storage density (GB per vCPU) that is roughly 2.6x greater
- Ratio of network bandwidth to vCPUs that is up to 2.7x greater
"Designed to meet these needs and to do an even better job of addressing the use cases that I mentioned above, these instances are powered by AWS-custom Intel Xeon Scalable (Skylake) processors with 3.1 GHz sustained all-core turbo performance, up to 60 TB of fast NVMe storage, and up to 100 Gbps of network bandwidth," Barr said.
I3en instances are available in the US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon) and Europe (Ireland) regions in On-Demand and Spot form.
