New AWS Lambda Monitoring Tool Leverages Artificial Intelligence

Instana announced it has extended the reach of its performance monitoring tool -- leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) -- to include AWS Lambda and many other AWS services.

The company is an Application Performance Monitoring (APM) specialist that focuses on monitoring dynamic containerized microservice applications.

Last week, Instana announced its tool supported AWS products including AWS Lambda, the Amazon cloud's serverless computing platform.

"More business applications are operating in a hybrid environment, incorporating traditional monolithic applications, wrappered with a new microservice stack, and using native AWS services. It's now also common to see customers starting to use AWS Lambda Functions for specific microservices as well," said Mirko Novakovic, Instana CEO, in a news release.

The support of AWS services provides continuous automatic discovery of Lambda and other AWS components, collecting configuration, performance and health information for each platform, along with application performance metrics across the entire environment.

The company said its solution leverages AI to automatically monitor, visualize and understand application performance for dynamic containerized microservice applications. The company says immediate alignment of the application service map with every change ensures AI performance analysis is accurate. Furthermore, AI is reportedly brought to bear to provide alerting and to identify each incident's likely root causes.

Along with Lambda, the other AWS native platforms being monitored via Instana sensors include:

  • S3 -- Amazon's Simple Cloud Storage Service, a Web-scale storage solution for Web applications
  • SQS -- the AWS messaging middleware platform
  • RDS -- the AWS native relational database
  • Dynamo -- the AWS NoSQL database
  • Kinesis -- a streaming optimization platform for AWS-based applications.
