GoDaddy Web Hoster Moving to AWS Cloud

The latest big win for Amazon Web Services Inc. is the announcement that GoDaddy Inc., an Internet domain registrar and Web hosting company, is going "all in" on AWS, planning to move most of its infrastructure to the cloud platform.

GoDaddy specializes in providing domain services and Web hosting to smaller, independent ventures such as personal Web sites, claiming more than 17 million worldwide customers and more than 75 million domain names under management.

In a multi-year transition, the companies said, the GoDaddy platform will move to the AWS cloud, leveraging several services including containers and machine learning.

"GoDaddy has been an active adopter of containerized applications, and will now leverage AWS’s Amazon Elastic Container Service for Kubernetes (Amazon EKS)," AWS said in a statement last week (March 28). "This fully managed service will allow GoDaddy to run its many Kubernetes workloads on AWS without change, since Amazon EKS is fully compatible with any standard Kubernetes environment."

Cutting-edge machine learning services will also be put to use with GPU-based Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) P3 Instances. Those instances will reportedly let developers more quickly train machine learning models to boost the performance of the GoDaddy Domain Appraisals tool, designed to let customers understand the monetary value of a Web site domain name.

AWS customers will also benefit, the companies said, with the incorporation of GoDaddy's tools for building Web sites -- Managed WordPress and GoCentral (a modular Web site builder) -- into the AWS platform.
