AWS Adds Quick Starts for IBM Spectrum Scale, Red Hat OpenShift and Solace VMR
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has added three more supported products to its library of Quick Start deployment guides.
Quick Starts are packaged deployment solutions that are designed to automate and streamline the process of setting up, configuring and launching new services on AWS. Built with AWS CloudFormation templates, each Quick Start promises to cut down the time it takes to stand up a new AWS service to about an hour or less.
Starting this week, AWS users can use Quick Starts to deploy the software-defined IBM Spectrum Scale storage solution, the Red Hat OpenShift container platform, and the Solace virtual messaging router (VMR).
IBM Spectrum Scale
The IBM Spectrum Scale software-defined storage solution is more high-performing and scalable than typical storage systems, with the ability to scale in capacity, nodes, bandwidth and IOPS.
The IBM Spectrum Scale Quick Start is designed "for users who require highly available access to a shared name space across multiple instances with good performance, without requiring an in-depth knowledge of IBM Spectrum Scale," according to AWS. This Quick Start creates IBM Spectrum Scale instances inside a user's virtual private cloud (VPC) that spans two AWS availability zones.
Notably, the Quick Start provides an IBM Spectrum Scale license that's only good for 90 days. After that trial period, customers will have to purchase licenses directly from IBM to continue using IBM Spectrum Scale.
Red Hat OpenShift
Built with Docker containers and the Kubernetes orchestration system, the Red Hat OpenShift container platform gives AWS developers another option to run their apps.
The Red Hat OpenShift Quick Start leverages Ansible playbooks in addition to CloudFormation templates to deploy Red Hat OpenShift in a user's VPC, spanning three availability zones. As AWS explains:
"The Quick Start includes AWS CloudFormation templates that build the AWS infrastructure by following AWS best practices, and then pass that environment to Ansible playbooks to build out the OpenShift environment. The AWS CloudFormation templates use AWS Lambda to generate a dynamic SSH key pair that is loaded into an Auto Scaling group. The Ansible inventory file is auto-generated accordingly. The combination of AWS CloudFormation and Ansible enables you to deploy and tear down your OpenShift environment by using CloudFormation stacks. The deployment includes OpenShift master nodes, etcd nodes, and nodes that provide the runtime environment for containers."
Solace VMR
Solace VMR lets users funnel data from a wide ecosystem of environments and form factors, including Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
Each Quick Start for Solace VMR takes about 20 minutes to complete. "This Quick Start deploys Solace VMR instances into a virtual private cloud (VPC) in your AWS account. Docker is installed on each VMR instance, and Solace is installed and executed within a Docker container," AWS said.
The environment is designed to be highly available, supported by three AWS availability zones.
