AWS Launches New Quick Start for Data Warehouse Deployments

Deploying a modern enterprise data warehouse on the Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS) cloud is now easier with a new Quick Start offering.

Quick Starts developed in cooperation with partners provide automated reference deployments for certain cloud workloads, simplifying the process of launching, configuring and running projects with the required AWS resources for compute, network, storage and other services while following best practices for security and availability.

The new "Modern Data Warehouse on AWS" Quick Start to deploy an enterprise data warehouse (EDW) environment is based on the company's Amazon Redshift service, also incorporating analytics and data visualization capabilities supplied by Tableau Server.

It includes:

  • An Amazon Redshift data warehouse, which is an enterprise-class relational database query and management system.
  • Tableau Server for business intelligence (BI) and data visualization capabilities, and a sample Tableau Server dashboard that demonstrates how to connect to multiple data sources in AWS.
  • A sample dataset that's loaded to an Amazon Redshift cluster to support efficient creation of aggregates at large data scale, and an associated SQL worker instance. Developers can also choose to load their own datasets.
  • Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) with PostgreSQL, to provide high-query-volume aggregate tables that feed scale-out dashboards.

"You can choose to build a new VPC [Amazon Virtual Private Cloud] infrastructure that's configured for security, scalability, and high availability, or use your existing VPC infrastructure for the data warehouse deployment," the company said in a blog post published last Friday. "AWS CloudFormation templates automate the deployment and provide customization options for network resources, instance types, and configuration for Amazon Redshift, PostgreSQL, and Tableau Server. The Quick Start also includes a guide with detailed information and step-by-step instructions."

More information is available in a "Data Warehouse Modernization on the AWS Cloud" PDF.
