Open Source Greenplum Database Now on AWS Marketplace
zData Inc. has a new AWS Marketplace offering based on the Greenplum Database, a massively parallel data warehouse that was open sourced by Pivotal Software Inc.
"Greenplum Database on AWS is geared towards Big Data analytics and has many data science features providing powerful and rapid analytics on petabyte scale data volumes," zData said in a statement yesterday.
It also competes with the Amazon Redshift data warehousing service on the Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS) cloud.
"zData's Marketplace product for the Greenplum Database distribution offers parallel features to the licensed version, Pivotal Greenplum, that powers many of the world's most innovative companies," the company said. "zData saw a high demand for an enterprise grade cloud alternative to Amazon Redshift, one that was made possible with Pivotal's release of Open Source Greenplum Database in early 2016."
According to its AWS Marketplace entry, the offering is integrated with zData's BURST "Elastic Managed Services platform."
"BURST offers self-service management augmented by zData's operations and support staff," the company said. "This new platform features integrated alerts, data science, dashboards and security."
Described as a click-to-load solution, the Greenplum service can be delivered as a single Amazon Machine Image (AMI) or as a Greenplum Database Cluster, with hourly fees that vary according to the specific instance type used and EC2 region. Annual pricing is also available.
"zData has been a strategic partner for many years," said Pivotal exec Jacque Istok. "We are excited to see them continue to innovate and expand the adoption of the Open Source Greenplum Database that Pivotal released to the community earlier this year."
