AWS App Runner To Help Speed Up App Deployments
To help developers quickly deploy containerized applications, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched the AWS App Runner managed service.
App Runner aims to streamline the steps required to deploy container images, including "setting up a load balancer, configuring the domain, setting up TLS, creating a CI/CD pipeline, and deploying to a container service," explained AWS principal advocate Martin Beeby in a recent blog post announcing the launch.
"AWS App Runner makes it easier for you to deploy web apps and APIs to the cloud, regardless of the language they are written in, even for teams that lack prior experience deploying and managing containers or infrastructure," Beeby wrote. "The service has AWS operational and security best practices built-it and automatically scale up or down at a moment’s notice, with no cold starts to worry about."
Developers don't need extensive experience with containers, networking, server configuration or load balancing to deploy apps with App Runner, AWS claims. It automatically scales up and down according to traffic. It promises high availability, low latency and built-in security and best practices protocols.
AWS also worked with some of its partners to expand App Runner's functionality. Beeby's post mentioned offerings from MongoDB, Datadog, HashiCorp, Pulumi, Logz.io, Sysdig and Trek10.
A detailed walkthrough of App Runner is available in this blog post by Justin Garrison, senior AWS developer advocate. Pricing for the service is on a usage basis. "With App Runner, you pay for the compute and memory resources used by your application," Beeby wrote. "You are only billed for App Runner when it is running and you can pause your application easily and resume it quickly."
