Amazon ECS Anywhere Launches To Ease On-Prem Container Management

Six months after its unveiling at the 2020 re:Invent conference, the new Amazon Elastic Container Service (ECS) Anywhere service is now generally available.

Amazon ECS Anywhere lets Amazon Web Services (AWS) customers orchestrate containers in their own datacenters. Tailored for today's increasingly hybrid environments, the service means to give customers the ability to run and manage containers on-premises without additional overhead.

"With ECS Anywhere, you can run and manage containers on any customer-managed infrastructure using the same cloud-based, fully managed, and highly scalable container orchestration service you use in AWS today," said Channy Yun, a principal developer advocate at AWS, in a recent blog post announcing the release. "You no longer need to prepare, run, update, or maintain your own container orchestrators on premises, making it easier to manage your hybrid environment and leverage the cloud for your infrastructure by installing simple agents."

Users of Amazon ECS Anywhere can manage their containerized apps with the same APIs and tooling that they currently use for the existing Amazon ECS orchestration product. Customers can perform monitoring, cluster management and workload scheduling tasks through a single control pane for all their containerized apps, whether they're in the cloud or on-premises.

"You can now enjoy the benefits of reduced cost and complexity by running container workloads such as data processing at edge locations on your own hardware maintaining reduced latency, and in the cloud using a single, consistent container orchestrator," Yun said.

In addition, AWS has cultivated a small roster of qualified partners that have developed services to extend Amazon ECS Anywhere's functionality. There are currently 20 vendors listed on the Amazon ECS Anywhere Partners page, offering services spanning DevOps, security, monitoring and consulting.
