AWS To Replace Jassy with Tableau CEO
The next leader of Amazon Web Services (AWS) will be Tableau CEO and former AWS marketing executive Adam Selipsky, the company announced Tuesday.
Selipsky will replace outgoing AWS chief Andy Jassy in the third quarter. Jassy is slated to become the next CEO of parent company Amazon at that time, replacing current CEO and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who is stepping down to become Executive Chair of the company's board of directors.
AWS announced Selipsky's appointment in a letter from Jassy to employees. "Adam brings strong judgment, customer obsession, team building, demand generation, and CEO experience to an already very strong AWS leadership team," Jassy wrote.
Selipsky is most recently the head of data analytics company Tableau, which he joined in 2016 and continued to lead after its acquisition in mid-2019 by Salesforce.
In the letter, Jassy noted that Tableau's value "quadrupled" under Selipsky, and that he helped facilitate "a fundamental business model change from perpetual licenses to subscription licensing."
Before moving to Tableau, Selipsky spent 11 years at AWS as vice president of marketing, sales and support. "[H]aving been in such a senior role at AWS for 11 years, he knows our culture and business well," Jassy said.
Jassy indicated that Selipsky will start at AWS on May 17 to begin the executive transition process. He will officially take the CEO role "sometime in Q3," Jassy said.
