AWS Joins Java Community Process
Amazon Web Services has added to its open source initiatives and support for Java developers using its platform by joining the Java Community Process.
The JCP describes itself as "the mechanism for developing standard technical specifications for Java technology."
The cloud giant has already invested heavily in open source Java development, having last year open sourced Amazon Correto. That offering, which the company previewed last November, is described as "a no-cost, multiplatform, production-ready distribution of the Open Java Development Kit (OpenJDK)."
Last week, AWS announced its continuing support of open source Java development.
"We are ramping up our investment in OpenJDK," said Yishai Galatzer of the AWS Developer Tools team. "At OSCON 2019 in Portland, Oregon, we released our first major standalone feature: Amazon Corretto Crypto Provider, accelerating cryptographic operations for all OpenJDK distributions.
"Today we are happy to announce that Amazon has joined the Java Community Process, which is the Java platform standards organization –-- the JCP is the repository for Java specifications. We are excited to participate in and contribute even more to the Java and open source communities. We look forward to our next set of contributions!"
He also took the time to review the company's other forays into open source Java, including contributing patches to OpenJDK, helping with maintenance of the OpenJDK 8 and 11 update projects and joining the Java Vulnerability Group, a community project to fix security issues in JDKs 8 and 11 before they're publicly disclosed.
