AWS Offers Visual Studio Code Toolkit

Visual Studio Code, a lightweight, open source, cross-platform code editor that has become the No. 1 tool for many developers, is now supported on the Amazon Web Services Inc. cloud with the general availability of a toolkit.

Unveiled as a preview in November 2018 and specifically named AWS Toolkit for Visual Studio Code, the open source plug-in, or extension, helps developers create, debug and deploy applications on the Amazon cloud, itself a No. 1 go-to platform.

Even more specifically, it helps developers:

  • Test code locally with step-through debugging in a Lambda-like environment
  • Deploy applications to the AWS Region of choice
  • Invoke Lambda functions locally or remotely
  • Specify function configurations such as an event payload and environment variables

Under an open source Apache License 2.0, license, its development is carried out on GitHub, where the project has garnered 602 stars and where resources are offered such as:

A July 11 announcement post details prerequisites such as setting up an AWS account and access key and using those credentials to connect to the toolkit, along with steps necessary to develop serverless AWS applications.

Along with support for .NET, Node.js and Python applications, along with serverless applications available at its initial GA launch, support for more AWS services are coming.

"The AWS Toolkit for Visual Studio Code provides an integrated experience for developing serverless applications," AWS said. "You can get started fast with built-in project templates that leverage the AWS Serverless Application Model (AWS SAM) to define and configure resources. The toolkit also includes an integrated experience for step-through debugging of serverless applications with the AWS SAM CLI and makes it easy to deploy your applications from the IDE."
