AWS Quick Start Now Supports SQL Server 2016
Amazon Web Services (AWS) this week updated its Quick Start deployment package for Microsoft SQL Server to include support for the latest version of the relational database management platform.
Quick Starts are designed to streamline and automate the deployment process for AWS customers looking to run new solutions in their environments. Leveraging AWS CloudFormation templates, each Quick Start package condenses the deployment process down to an hour or less for most solutions.
There are multiple Quick Start solutions available in AWS' library. The SQL Server package, which AWS first added in 2014, is just one of several database- and storage-related Quick Starts; others include MongoDB, Oracle and SAP HANA.
On Tuesday, AWS announced that it has updated the SQL Server Quick Start to support SQL Server 2016, which Microsoft released last June.
In addition, users now have two choices for running Active Directory with this Quick Start. "You can use AWS Directory Service for Active Directory, or manage the EC2 instances for Active Directory yourself," the company said in its announcement.
Other additions to the SQL Server Quick Start include:
- The option to choose from shared tenancy, dedicated tenancy or dedicated host.
- Support for two or three availability zones.
- The choice of either three SQL nodes or two SQL nodes combined with dedicated file share witness.
- Support for new R4 instances.
