Teradata's New IntelliCloud Leverages AWS for Big Data Analytics
Data analytics specialist Teradata this week announced a secure managed cloud service that features the Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS) cloud as a deployment option.
Teradata IntelliCloud is a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) offering that can be deployed in the company's own IntelliFlex enterprise data warehouse platform or in AWS infrastructure provisioned and managed by Teradata.
The company said IntelliCloud will be available in select U.S.-based AWS regions in the first quarter of this year, with international public cloud regions from AWS to be added later. Also future deployment options are planned for the Microsoft Azure cloud and on-premises only.
Teradata said the analytics service will support the same enterprise use cases and workloads handled by the company's existing on-premises systems, but is available on a subscription pricing model typical of SaaS offerings.
"Common use cases for companies running their analytic ecosystem entirely in IntelliCloud are production, test and development, and quality assurance," Teradata said in a statement this week. "Hybrid cloud use cases for IntelliCloud customers also employing a Teradata on-premises system include cloud disaster recovery, cloud bursting, and cloud data marts and data labs."
Initial capabilities of the new offering highlighted by the company include:
- Choice of Teradata Database, Teradata Aster Analytics, or Hadoop software from Cloudera or Hortonworks.
- Bundled infrastructure services including platform deployment and management, onboarding and provisioning assistance, system monitoring and maintenance, patches and software upgrades, encryption of data in motion and at rest, enterprise-class security, and premier cloud support.
- Service availability of 99.9% for infrastructure managed in Teradata datacenters.
- Analytic ecosystem applications including Teradata QueryGrid, Teradata AppCenter, Demand Chain Management, Industry Data Models and more.
"Customers will control their IntelliCloud accounts with an easy-to-use, Web-based management console for monitoring system utilization, scheduling back-ups, setting or modifying security parameters, spinning up additional cloud resources, and more," the company said in a blog post.
