Microsoft Adds Support for Amazon Redshift in Power BI
Power BI, Microsoft's cloud-based analytics and data visualization solution, now supports the Amazon Redshift data warehouse.
The new capability, which is currently in preview, was announced by Microsoft late last week as part of the latest round of updates to its Power BI service. The support for Redshift is being enabled by a new "data connector" in Power BI Desktop.
"This connector provides connectivity to Amazon Redshift in Power BI Desktop, including both Import and DirectQuery connectivity modes, enabling full flexibility in terms of connectivity options for Report Authoring," said Miguel Llopis, a senior program manager at Microsoft, in a blog post.
Llopis added that support for Redshift will be added to other Power BI products, namely Power BI Gateway and PowerBI.com, at a later date.
Power BI already supports database services from Oracle, IBM, MySQL and others. The addition of a Redshift connector means users can now access data from a Redshift database, treating it just like any other data source. Users can import their Redshift data onto Power BI desktop, monitor and analyze that data, turn it into reports, and share it across their organizations.

According to Llopis, Redshift has been "one of the most frequently requested data sources for Power BI over the last year."
