Amazon Elastic MapReduce for Big Data Analytics Is Updated

Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS) yesterday announced updates to its Amazon EMR (Elastic MapReduce) service for Big Data analytics.

The Amazon EMR Web service provides a managed framework based on Apache Hadoop technology, designed to simplify distributed Big Data processing.

It lets cloud developers use frameworks such as Apache Spark and Presto on managed clusters of EC2 computing instances. AWS exec Abhishek Sinha said in a blog post yesterday that it has been updated to provide more local storage.

"Newer versions of EMR (3.10 and 4.x) allow you to use Amazon EBS [Elastic Block Store] volumes to increase the local storage of each instance," Sinha said. "This works well with the existing set of supported instance types, and also gives you the ability to use the M4 and C4 instance types with EMR."

Sinha said such storage customization is useful if "your processing requirements demand a larger amount of HDFS (or local) storage than what is available by default on an instance" or if "you want to take advantage of the latest generation EC2 instance types such as the M4, C4, and R3 and need more storage than is available on these instance types."

The new features are available now.
