HP Helion Update Supports AWS-Compatible Private Clouds

HP today announced an update to its flagship enterprise cloud computing software will support private cloud deployments compatible with the Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS) public cloud platform.

Coming later this year, the HP Helion CloudSystem 9.0 portfolio will feature support for AWS-compatible private clouds via integration with HP's Helion Eucalyptus software. The company said this will provide flexibility to customers wishing to deploy existing AWS workloads onto clouds under their control.

"HP Helion Eucalyptus is open source software for building AWS-compatible private and hybrid clouds," the company said. "It leverages your existing IT infrastructure to create a self-service private cloud behind your firewall. Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) is enabled with the private cloud by abstracting the available heterogeneous compute, network and storage resources."

HP said Helion Eucalyptus helps developers create production-ready software by supporting industry-standard AWS APIs to work with AWS services such as Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), Elastic Block Store (EBS), Simple Storage Service (S3), Identity and Access Management (IAM), Elastic Load Balancing (ELB), CloudWatch, CloudFormation and Auto Scaling.

In addition to the AWS support via integration with the Eucalyptus software, HP Helion CloudSystem 9.0 integrates with HP Helion OpenStack and the HP Helion Development Platform to let users work with multiple cloud platforms, such as Microsoft Azure, HP Helion Public Cloud, OpenStack and VMware.

"HP Helion CloudSystem is an integrated, end-to-end, private cloud solution, built to help customers realize the benefits of a hybrid infrastructure -- designed for traditional and cloud native workloads, enabling automation, orchestration and control across multiple heterogeneous clouds, workloads and technologies," HP said in a statement.

The CloudSystem software comes in a standalone package capable of working in multiple-vendor datacenters, or integrated with blade-based or hyper-converged hardware via the HP ConvergedSystem.

HP, at its HP Discover 2015 conference in Las Vegas, also announced the launch of a beta HP Helion Eucalyptus Managed Private Cloud, which will be accessible through an easy-access portal, along with a companion tool for OpenStack environments.

Benefits of the managed services listed by HP include:

• New automated provisioning capabilities through a self-service portal based on HP Cloud Service Automation, enabling clouds to be deployed more quickly.
• Support for multiple platforms to enable hybrid cloud proof-of-concepts using HP Helion OpenStack and HP Helion Eucalyptus.
• Cloud native application development capabilities through integration with the HP Helion Development Platform, allowing enterprises to rapidly develop, deploy and deliver cloud native apps.

The managed service are also scheduled for availability later this year.
