Rackspace Updates Compass AWS Management Tool
Rackspace, a managed cloud services company, has updated its Compass management tool for the Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS) platform, expanding it to include more than 350 automated best practice checks and other features.
Compass provides Rackspace customers with cost management, security and compliance, AWS utilization and AWS inventory services.
The tool is part of the company's "Fanatical Support for AWS" offering, first unveiled a year ago. Under that program, organizations receive tooling, automation and support from Rackspace's roster of 100 AWS-certified engineers.
"Compass has been expanded to include more than 350 automated best practice checks (a 7x increase over the previous version) and new functionality for advanced cost optimization, security and inventory management, and utilization monitoring," the company said last week. "These features, combined with the broader portfolio of Fanatical Support for AWS tooling, represent a comprehensive capability set for managing AWS environments."
Rackspace focused on the cost management capabilities of the tool, which it said provides business insights such as AWS spending trends, ways to "rightsize" underutilized resources, recommendations for buying Reserved Instances and aggregated spend analyses across multiple dimensions and AWS accounts.
Rackspace partnered with CloudCheckr -- an AWS Advanced Technology Partner -- to use that company's AWS governance and tooling technology in Compass and the Fanatical Support for AWS offering.
"Cost optimization and utilization monitoring fill one of the major holes in process and management when using AWS," said the company quoted 451 Research analyst Carl Brooks as saying. "Having it automated and available on demand in this fashion is a sought after service capability."
The upgraded Compass is now available to all Fanatical Support for AWS customers.
