AWS, IBM and Azure Top-Ranked in Big Data Study
A user satisfaction study ranking Big Data vendors gave the highest marks to Amazon Web Services (AWS), followed by IBM and Microsoft Azure.
The study, compiled in February by Info-Tech Research Group subsidiary SoftwareReviews, scored seven Big Data software vendors on four categories: vendor capabilities, product features, likeliness to recommend and "net emotional footprint" (which assesses the fairness and trustworthiness of each vendor based on user perceptions). Those four scores were then averaged out to create a "composite score" for each vendor.
Of the seven vendors, AWS' Big Data portfolio scored the highest, earning a composite score of 8.1 out of 10.
Behind AWS were IBM InfoSphere and Azure, which both received a score of 8 out of 10.
SoftwareReviews placed each of the top three vendors in the "Leader" quadrant of its study:
"Each of the three winning big data vendors earned a very high Net Emotional Footprint score, between 82% and 85%, significantly more than the average score of 77%," the company said in a statement. "Amazon Web Services Big Data users liked its analytics, data science tools, and data security the best, earning top product for each. IBM InfoSphere earned top product for metadata management, and second place for its real-time capabilities. Microsoft Azure Big Data took the top-product spot for workload management and monitoring as well as analytics and reporting."
The remaining vendors and their scores were as follows:
- Hortonworks: 7.9 out of 10
- Cloudera: 7.9 out of 10
- SAS: 7.8 out of 10
- Vertica: 7.5 out of 10
SoftwareReviews compiled the data for its vendor rankings using "feedback from IT and business professionals." The full report is available for $199, but a preview of the findings is here.
