AWS Offers to Help Migrate Server VMs from Azure Cloud
Amazon Web Services is offering to help organizations migrate their applications and workloads from server virtual machines running in Microsoft's Azure cloud to the Amazon cloud.
That is done with new functionality added to the AWS Server Migration Service (SMS), which, according to its site, is "an agentless service which makes it easier and faster for you to migrate thousands of on-premises workloads to AWS."
Last week, AWS announced that "on-premises" migration capability has been extended to include Azure virtual machines (VMs).
"The new capability makes it easier for you to migrate existing applications running in Microsoft Azure to the AWS cloud to take advantage of greater reliability, faster performance, more security capabilities, and lower costs," the company said.
Previously, AWS said, users could migrate VMs running in VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V environments.
"Starting today, customers can use the simplicity and ease of use of Server Migration Service to also migrate VMs running in Microsoft Azure," AWS said in its April 18 post. "You can discover Azure VMs, group them into applications, and migrate the application group as a single unit without having to go through the hassle of coordinating the replication of individual servers or decoupling application dependencies. Server Migration Service significantly reduces the time to migrate applications and lessens the risk of errors in the migration process."
The service is free except for the AWS resources used, such as Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2).
