GitHub Enterprise Gets AWS Quick Start

GitHub Enterprise is now available on the Amazon Web Services Inc. cloud as an AWS Quick Start, a ready-made packaging of resources designed to easily deploy specific workloads.

GitHub Enterprise, from GitHub Inc., was introduced in 2011 as a means to help organizations self-host their own implementations of the GitHub.com software development platform, which provides collaborative coding resources for large-scale enterprise dev teams.

The platform handles commit histories, code browsing, compare views, pull requests, issues, wikis, gists, organizations and team management and more.

With the new GitHub Enterprise on AWS Quick Start, those platform resources -- even though they were originally targeted for on-premises implementations -- are packaged together with AWS compute, network, storage and other services as an automated reference deployment.

"This Quick Start uses AWS CloudFormation templates to deploy GitHub Enterprise into a virtual private cloud (VPC) in your AWS account," AWS said in a blog post on Friday. "You can build a new VPC for GitHub Enterprise, or deploy the software into your existing VPC. You can customize your deployment by configuring your network resources and modifying the instance type and storage options for the GitHub Enterprise Web server. The Quick Start also sets up a sample GitHub organization and repository for testing and trying out GitHub Enterprise on AWS."

The Quick Start acts as a 45-day free trial of the deployment, which is promised to get up and running in about 15 minutes.

"GitHub Enterprise is a development and collaboration platform built on Git that enables developers to build and share software easily and effectively," the Quick Start description states. "It provides an integrated platform for continuous integration and development, a non-linear workflow for collaboration, and in-depth monitoring and auditing for administrators. By deploying GitHub Enterprise on AWS, you can take advantage of a configurable infrastructure for your coding and deployment tasks."

Although the Quick Start is new, GitHub already offers its enterprise offering on the AWS cloud.

"Millions of developers and the world's best companies use GitHub to streamline the way they build and ship software. With AWS support, GitHub offers the same great experience to system administrators. Spin up an instance, scale storage, and run backups quickly and efficiently."

Using the Quick Start entails no additional costs, as users are responsible for any AWS costs used while running the reference deployment.
