AWS Acquires Creative Software Firm Thinkbox
Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Monday acquired Thinkbox Software, a Canadian firm that specializes in high-performance computing solutions for creative industries.
The acquisition was announced on the Thinkbox blog by CEO and President Chris Bond, who founded the Winnipeg, Manitoba-based company in 2010.
"We're excited to announce that we've been acquired by Amazon! We'll be joining the Amazon Web Services family, and we're looking forward to working together to deliver exciting customer offerings," Bond wrote in the brief post.
Thinkbox, which has offices in Los Angeles, Calif., as well as Canada, is known for its visual effects and rendering software, which have been used in many gaming, film and TV projects, as well as Web sites. Its products include Krakatoa, an image rendering solution; a compute management toolkit called Deadline; a 3-D asset management software called XMesh; and Sequoia, which is designed for point cloud meshing.
The company also has customers in the medical visualization, engineering and computer-aided design/manufacturing industries.
Terms of the deal have not been disclosed. Neither Thinkbox nor AWS have detailed how the acquisition will affect either of their product portfolios.
In the near term, at least, Bond said "it's still business as usual" for Thinkbox.
"We'll continue to provide you, our customers, with remarkable support whether you work on-prem, in the cloud or both," he wrote.
