Stratoscale Buys Tesora, Adds AWS Database Service

Stratoscale Ltd., which provides companies with their own on-premises Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS) regions, acquired Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) specialist Tesora Inc. and announced a new AWS-compatible relational database service (RDS).

Stratoscale, a 2013 Israeli start-up, provides software-defined cloud infrastructure called Symphony that can leverage commodity x86 servers to let organizations effectively run a private AWS region within their datacenters.

In buying Tesora, a seven-year-old Massachusetts firm, Stratoscale acquires technology that builds on the OpenStack Trove DBaaS platform. Tesora's platform provides a single interface to offer organizations secure cloud access to popular databases.

"Tesora's team and DBaaS platform augments and enhances Stratoscale's capabilities in delivering database services for an on-prem AWS region, addressing market demand for managed NoSQL, RDS and adding DynamoDB, ElasticCache and Redshift compatible services that can be easily deployed in any environment," Stratoscale said in a news release this week.

"The Tesora DBaaS platform includes features that enterprises depend on for self-service provisioning and management of seventeen certified databases, including Oracle, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis, Cassandra, DataStax Enterprise, Couchbase, MariaDB, Percona, PostgresSQL and DB2 Express."

Along with the acquisition, Stratoscale said a newly launched, fully managed, AWS-compatible RDS will provide single-click deployment and seamless scalability to enterprises while at the same time removing operational friction.

The company also recently launched Symphony 3, which is available in a free trial for organizations wanting to install and operate their own AWS region.
