Quantum Adds AWS Data Deduplication Service

Quantum Corp. introduced three new solutions designed to help users tailor cloud deployments for their specific needs, eschewing the traditional "one-size-fits-all" approach, including a data deduplication service for the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud.

Q-Cloud Protect for AWS joins Q-Cloud Archive and Q-Cloud Vault will help users integrate cloud deployments into multi-tier, hybrid storage architectures, said Quantum, which specializes in scale-out storage, archive and data protection.

The AWS service is a subscription offering in the Amazon Marketplace, adding new capabilities to the company's DXi deduplication appliances. Now customers can replicate data coming from an on-premises physical or virtual appliance to a virtual DXi instance running on the AWS cloud.

Quantum said key features of the service include:

  • Easy access to the Amazon public cloud and its benefits, with no changes to applications or processes.
  • Cost savings enabled by the most efficient method of data deduplication.
  • Support for U.S. federal government customers using AWS GovCloud.
  • Secure, encrypted data in transit and at rest.

The other two offerings provide public cloud storage services, with Q-Cloud Archive facilitating fast on-demand access to cloud data and Q-Cloud Vault providing long-term "cold" storage for disaster recovery, data retention and other uses.

"It's important to view the cloud as another storage tier option rather than a place where all data should reside," the company quoted 451 Research analyst Dave Simpson as saying. "That's the approach Quantum has taken, building on its expertise in managing and protecting data within and across storage tiers. In addition, the new Q-Cloud offerings enhance the value that both StorNext and DXi provide, not only to existing Quantum customers but also to other users that have been hesitant about incorporating the cloud."
