AWS Marketplace Gets Zend PHP Development Platform

PHP specialist Zend Technologies announced with Amazon Web Services (AWS) that its Zend Server 7 development platform is available on the Amazon cloud as a new Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) offering.

Zend and AWS announced the availability of Zend Server 7 on the AWS Marketplace last week. Launched just last month, this latest version of Zend Server includes the new Z-Ray feature, which essentially gives application developers real-time visibility into their code as they write it, enabling them to catch and correct errors before the final stages of production.

Using the Zend platform on AWS will lower the barriers for developers to start their projects, as well as allow them to scale their projects as needed, the two companies said.

"With Z-Ray on AWS, you get the added benefit of being able to start with a very small developer image and transition to a full-fledged production environment that is fully-clustered and auto-scaling (AWS CloudFormation templates are available)," wrote AWS Chief Evangelist Jeff Barr in a blog post last week. "In addition, developers using Zend Studio will be able to leverage Z-Ray to go directly to the page where the code to fix is located (Z-Ray will work with any of your favorite tools; you need not use Zend Studio)."

In addition to the existing Enterprise and Professional editions, Zend also launched a new Developer Edition of Zend Server 7 on AWS. All three flavors are being offered with a free 30-day trial. After the trial period, the Developer Edition will cost $0.03 per hour, not including AWS usage fees.

"At that price, developers can easily create sandbox environments that they can spin up or down with a minimal investment," according to Zend's announcement. "And when the application is ready for production, developers will migrate the AMI [Amazon Machine Image] to either Professional Edition or Enterprise Edition."

The Professional Edition will cost $0.04 per hour on AWS, and the Enterprise Edition $0.06 per hour.
